We have been here for TWO MONTHS as of today!!And I think for all that we are juggling we have made pretty good progress. I mean, at least our boxes are unpacked! There is still so much that I want to do..but this is (what I hope to be!) our forever home.. so it’s okay to take some time!
I really thought we were going to build a house – but we just could never find something that was 100% us and fit the checklist. So many beautiful model homes and it would have been super easy to get swept away in building.. but after being here for two months I am SO GLAD we also looked into resale homes and couldn’t imagine being any where else.
Our first home was kind of like an ex-boyfriend.. you move forward knowing a good list of must haves in the next one. I think our old home was really beautiful, but it definitely wasn’t a long-term relationship, and we knew that going in to it two & half years ago.
When looking for a new house.. it is SO important to have a checklist! This was a portion of ours..
Two car garage
Close to Ft. Lee for David’s work
Good school system
Good natural light
Cosmetic changes only
The proximity to David’s work ruled out a decent amount of resale houses (and some really lovely new construction lots! Hi Magnolia Green! Looking at you!) but it’s important to us that he wasn’t driving so much every day… less time in the car = more time with the boys! I can honestly say when I saw the listing for our new house I knew it was the one – and it was in the perfect location! Visiting it in person just confirmed it, and driving down the street and seeing all the kids playing outside.. icing on the cake!
OK! You came to this post to see PICTURES!! This is SUCH a “work in progress” type of post so don’t judge on ugly paint colors! I’ll try to update monthly to show all of the changes we are going to make – thankfully nothing major!
First up.. the studio! Was a blue.. now is white! There is currently a tan carpet that will soon be replaced! There are two regular sized windows and a double door in this room- good lighting!
Can’t believe I’m sharing THIS image..but only because I know the “after” will be sooo much better! This is our super bright master bedroom. Our bed frame was cracking so we just tossed it before we moved.. such big hopes for this room- have everything picked out just have to find the time!
Going to have this fireplace re-done at some point. I’m not really a fan of green, though maybe I should leave it until after Christmas? It surely will go with the decor. Behind this is a really dark chocolate brown accent wall.. that might be my next victim!
One of the areas of the house I am in love with.. and don’t really have anything to do besides get a little breakfast nook table! There is also a dining room off of the kitchen so I am not in a hurry to furnish this room.
The play room! We are in here each day – The little nook is perfect for a bench & storage! Guess I need to buy David some more tools for Christmas!
The very first thing we did after unpacking was to remove this tree! We couldn’t really see past it and it really blocked the house up.. looks so much better now!
Because we have dogs.. this was a top priority for us as well, to fence in the back yard. Our back yard space in this house was super tiny compared to what we had the previous house, and this was our ONLY negotiation from our Checklist.. To be honest the kids have not even really been back there, mainly it’s just for the dogs. There’s also a large porch back here that isn’t seen in this photo and another small section of grass.
So far for this room we have just added the furniture of course, and just this weekend I finally found a rug that I loved for the middle. Trying to decide whether to leave it open or put a fabric ottoman in the middle? In this room there is a 2nd fireplace that is removable we just have to have a professional come out to stop the natural gas.. which reminds me I need to call them tomorrowThe fireplace in this room will be replaced with a normal TV stand.
Did you read that whole post? You deserve a nap!!
Will update in a month to see what we’ve done since then!
